Bleached oak wooden table tops. What is our secret?
Tables with bleached tops are a highly delicate and sublime addition to the interiors. The colour of the table top can perfectly contrast with the darker surroundings or, on the contrary, complement bright and minimalistic interiors. White oak tree – inspiration for SFD Furniture Design
The inspiration for SFD to develop a bleached wood table was the desire to recreate the natural colour of white oak wood (Quercus alba). This is a naturally occurring tree in Northern America, characterized by a beautiful colour and wood rarity. In Europe, it is hard to find and quite expensive. So we decided to achieve a similar effect with the use of durable European oak wood and a suitable wood dye.

How is a bleached oak dining table made?
The process of creating a top for tables such as the BASIC FEM bleached oak dining table or the BASIC FYRA bleached oak dining table in the initial phase does not differ from regular tops in natural brown wood colour. The top is made of oak boards glued together and then cut and sanded. The main difference is that the wood is soaked in wood stain – a special white pigment – before oiling. It penetrates quite deeply into the structure of the wood and permanently stains it. The final step is the application of several layers of natural wax oil on the prepared top, which protects and preserves the wood.

Stained table vs painted table – what are the differences between painted and stained tabletops?
The wood stain penetrates deeply into the structure of the wood so that it will not so easily spruce off or fade like paint. It is also possible to spot-renew the stained table in case of damage. To restore a painted table top to its state before the damage, it is necessary to de facto repaint the whole thing from scratch. Another advantage is the unique structure of the wood and the natural discolouration, which the stain shows. Such a worktop also ages beautifully which gives it a unique character.
